Attract & Retain the Best People

Attract & Retain the Best People

Every day, I’m reminded how incredible our industry is, rooms full of creative, emotionally intelligent people who dedicate their time to making others look and feel great. But not everything as it may seem!

The truth behind the scenes

And yet, I also see the same story play out:

  • Management frameworks that stifle growth.
  • Chaotic systems that burn out owners and staff.
  • Pay structures that are overly complex, outdated, and don’t drive the right results.

Let’s be honest, just because the numbers add up on a spreadsheet doesn’t mean your pay structure is serving you, your business, or your team.

Don't hold yourself back

Also, I hear “we’ve always done it this way,” if that’s your moto, you’re holding yourself and your team back.

The salons that thrive are the ones that create transparency, reward the right behaviours, and make accountability a positive part of their culture.

When you attract and retain the best people, everything else becomes easier.

Start with culture

Before you think about pay, recruitment, or targets, ask yourself:

What kind of culture do I want?

Do you want a group of independents under one roof, or a united team working towards shared goals?

Once you know your answer, you can focus on finding the people who fit that vision. That’s when recruitment becomes easier, your job offers more attractive, and your pay structure more effective for both the business and the employee.

The Golden Rule

If I’d have known this sooner in business! – Now, it’s my main guiding principle:

Attract and retain the best people.

Everything else – quality, growth, profitability and culture all flows from there.

Strip Away the Unnecessary

Many salons are weighed down by old, overly complicated ways of doing things. The most common reason?

"It’s just the way we’ve always done it."

But if “the way we’ve always done it” isn’t giving you the results you want, it’s time to rethink.

The more you simplify and make things transparent, the more accountability you create. And with accountability comes trust. With trust comes a positive culture. And with culture comes higher retention, of both clients and staff, and better earnings for everyone.

What the ideal could look like!

If you could start again tomorrow, imagine this:

  • Crystal-clear culture: the right people, the right behaviours, the right clients, and the profits you want.
  • Well-designed salary packages: pay well, reward the right behaviours, and build the culture you want.
  • A meaningful team goal: focused on company goals that matter, encourage collaboration and celebrate wins.
  • Transparency – no place to hide: everyone knows what’s expected, managers can focus on developing people, and staff feel empowered to succeed.
